Written earlier this afternoon ... the following:
Now that September has arrived, teams begin to expand their 25 man roster to the maximum of 40. Recently, Cardinals back-up catcher Brayan Pena was activated off the 60-Day DL and the minor league contract for rookie catcher Carson Kelly was purchased by the Cardinals. IF Dean Anna was DFA'd to make room for Kelly on the expanded roster.

Pitchers Mike Mayers and Sam Tuivailala are both familiar players to Cardinals fans.
Sam Tuivailala has been in and out of the Cardinals bullpen throughout the season. His last was for nine game and returned to Memphis Triple-A as his performance was not quite up to speed this last visit to the majors. However, in Triple-A play, he has been the 'saving grace' in 18 of 24 save opportunities. At the major league level, in eight appearances he has given up six runs on 11 hits. Last resort from the bullpen?
Mike Mayers, who is coming to the majors a second time, will be look to for long relief or mid-to-late innings. Of course, I'm hoping Cardinals fans will "put to pasture" his first appearance and debut. He was called up as Cardinals sixth man in their rotation. A greenhorn that had about a 24 hour notice that he would be pitching against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Busch Stadium to be televised for all the world to see on ESPN's "featured" Sunday Night Baseball game. To say it was an event that all would like to forget, I'm just in hopes most will. He's due for his second chance to prove, he is not that pitcher that was pummeled by the Dodgers in his 1.1 IP major league debut giving up nine earned runs and only one strikeout on that fateful day Sunday, July 24.
Being a one day stay for Mayers, he was sent back down to Memphis to continue his work. With 25 starts between Springfield Double-A Cardinals and Memphis Triple-A Redbirds he has had a combined 25 starts, 9-10/3.19 ERA. I believe in a relief role, Mayers can be very beneficial to our bullpen. Let's tuck away his one and only performance and give the kid a chance to "re-prove" himself.
OF Jose Martinez is a veteran minor leaguer with ten seasons of experience. He is a native of Venezuela and he was acquired by the Cardinals organization in the latter part of May from the Kansas City Royals. With Memphis this summer, his slash line is .269/.326/.415. He will be a good piece off the bench as he makes his first major league appearance.
More details provided in the Twitter message above regarding Jose Martinez. The three will join the team while in Pittsburgh.
