UPDATE ~ SIEGRIST FOREARM ISSUE, AUGUST 15 AT 2:15 PM:
Kevin Siegrist (arm) is hoping to avoid the disabled list.
Siegrist got pulled after just eight pitches Sunday against the Cubs after experiencing arm fatigue. "It just hasn't been feeling too good," the left-hander said after the game. "It hasn't been too long, just a little dead-arm feeling." He might be limited to side sessions for much of this week as the Cardinals try to ensure the issue isn't serious. Aug 15 - 9:15 AM
St. Louis Cardinals LHP/reliever Kevin Siegrist was retired early in the eighth in the final game against the Cubs last night. He allowed a home run by Anthony Rizzo; but, went on to strikeout Ben Zobrist looking. However, with forearm issues just last week, manager Mike Matheny had instructed catch Yadier Molina to "keep close watch" on Siegrist. He had just returned from the 15-Day DL being diagnosised with Mononucleosis the early part of July.
Per Jenifer Langosch, MLB.com article: "Before the game, Matheny told catcher Yadier Molina to be extra vigilant in watching Siegrist's mannerisms on the mound. When Molina saw Siegrist shaking his left arm after throwing his eighth pitch of the eighth inning, he went for a visit. Matheny and a team athletic trainer soon followed, and, despite Siegrist's plea to continue, his day ended there."
Siegrist, returned after the All Star break, fresh and in the month of July (15th-29th) he held a 1.13 ERA, only allowing one earned run on five hits in his eight innings pitched. He did issue four walks; but, had six strikeouts. In August, he has seen elevation in his delivery. Thus far this month, with six innings pitched, he has allowed two home runs, four earned runs, issued two walks and five strikeouts for a 6.00 ERA.
He has been placed on the Day-to-Day injury list for a forearm issue. This is not a new situation for Siegrist. He was placed on the 15-Day DL in 2014. The injury was more a wrist issue which caused tightening around mid-forearm. Should Siegrist be placed on the 15-Day DL currently, the timeliness of prospect Alex Reyes addition to the Cardinals bullpen recently may be even more important at this juncture.
Siegrist's season ERA is 2.91 with a 0.99 WHIP. RHP/reliever Reyes, with four innings pitched, four strikeouts, 0.00 ERA/0.50 WHIP, earned his first major league win against the Chicago Cubs in Game three this past series. His presence in the Cardinals bullpen is reassuring.
